The entire title reads Etching of the large engraving of Mexican News one of the six plates for the Members of 1851.

Originally sold by subscription to the union’s members in 1851, this etching is engraved by Alfred Jones after Richard Caton Woodville 1848 painting War news from Mexico first exhibited at the gallery of the American Art-Union in 1849, and.now at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR. The scene takes place during the Mexican War. The picture shows a group of people under a porch listening to a man reading the latest news of the war.

Richard Caton Woodville (1825-1855) was a talented American artist from Baltimore who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of fine arts under the direction of the German portrait painter Karl Ferdinand Sohn. Despite a short career (he died at the age of 30), he produced some twenty paintings widely acclaimed by the critics, some of them reproduced as prints like this example.

The print was etched and engraved by the successful American engraver Alfred Jones (1819-1900), born in Liverpool (England) who came to the U.S. in 1834. Jones worked chiefly for banknote engravers, but was also known for his engravings after American artists.
