George Barbier (1882-1932) was a French painter, fashion designer and illustrator. He also signed under the pseudonym of Edward W. Larry. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens, he made his first exhibition at the Salon des humoristes in 1910 under the name of Edward William Larry. He regularly appears at the Salon des artistes décorateurs throughout his life, and he works for satirical newspapers such as Le Rire or La Baïonnette, then for fashion magazines such as Journal des dames et des modes (1797-1839), la Gazette du Bon Ton, Modes et Manière d'aujourd'hui, les Feuillets d'art, Femina, Vogue France, Comœdia illustré
His work reaches the world of entertainment, he also illustrates advertising catalogs and numerous books of authors such as Baudelaire, Verlaine, Pierre Louÿs, etc. His masterpiece is Falbalas et fanfreluches, an almanac of past and future fashions in five volumes, published between 1922 and 1925.
