Description

Set of three anonymous manuscripts. The first two were most likely written by a soldier who lived through the sieges of Alexandria and Valencia. The third, by another hand, groups together different itineraries from Cazal.

Anonymous manuscript, entitled Mémoir du Siege de la Ville d'Alexandrie commencé La nuit du 6 au 7 Octobre 1745, [Alexandria, October 1745]. 6 pp. small in-4 (15 X 20,5 cm). Pages bound with a blue silk ribbon, handwritten map of the Attack on the city enhanced.

The manuscript describes the events of the War of the Austrian Succession that followed the defeat of the King of Sardinia in his camp in Alexandria on September 28, 1745. The description of the military actions is also illustrated in the manuscript map that shows the enemy attacks, movements and works of the Gallo-Hispanic army during the first six days of the siege. Engaging the advantageous position on Monte Castello and crossing the river Tanaro, the Franco-Spanish army concentrated its actions on the siege of the citadel of Alexandria. The siege of the city lasted 7 months despite the difference in strength between the army of the city composed of 4 battalions and that of the Franco-Spanish alliance of 16 battalions.

Anonymous manuscript, entitled Mémoir du siège de Valence commencé la nuit du 19 au 20 octobre 1745, Valence, 9 November 1745. 12 ½ pp. Small in-4 (15 x 20.5 cm). Pages bound with a blue silk ribbon, ink slightly faded.

This manuscript was written on November 9, 1745, and describes the work of the Gallo-Hispanic army during the siege of Valencia initiated on the night of October 19. The author gives an account of the events of the siege, describing in particular the difficulties linked to the climate, the enemy attacks, the advance of the soldiers and the human losses.

Anonymous manuscript, entitled Itinerary from Cazal to Ponte di Stura, Moncalvo, Asty, Nizza de la Paglia, Alexandria &c. (s.l.) 26 November 1745. 5 pp. in-folio (24 x 37 cm). Pages bound with a blue silk ribbon.

This itinerary dated November 26, 1745, describes the routes from Cazal to Ponte di Stura, Moncalvo, Asty, Nizza de la Paglia, Alexandria, etc., during the War of the Austrian Succession. The document lists the different routes, adding the distance in miles of the paths to be taken.
