Description

Benedikt Piringer, Landscape of Galicia, late 18th-early 19th century, ink, pen, brown wash and white highlight on paper, 46 x 57 cm, signed lower right: "Nach der Naatur gezeichnet in Galicien: B. Piringer".

The draughtsman and engraver Benedikt Piringer was born in Vienna in 1780. He became a student of Braud and Hertzinger, and he died in Paris in 1826. His works are notably present in the collections of the British Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and in the Albertina of Vienna as well.

This unpublished sheet was made by the artist in Galicia, a province of the Austrian Empire which was formed in 1772 from the Polish territories annexed during the first partition of Poland. This event refers to the successive annexations on the territory of the Republic of the Two Nations (Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania) at the end of the 18th century (1772, 1793 and 1795) due to the Kingdom of Prussia and the Austrian Empire. The latter wanted to annex parts of its territory, while the Russian Empire wanted to maintain its protectorate. Galicia was gradually placed under the aegis of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine from 1772 to 1918.
