Description

Hippolyte Voynant (1810- ?), Cavalier oriental, 1842, black stone on yellow paper with embossing, 27.8 x 22.8 cm, signed lower left: "H. Voynant 1842".

Born in 1810 in Dunkerque, Hippolyte Voynant participated in the Salon of 1846 where he exhibited a plaster bust of Marshal Soult, Duke of Dalmatia. Dated 1842, this unpublished sheet also attests to his excellent drawing skills. Inspired by Delacroix and Fromentin, the artist represents a richly dressed oriental rider in the middle of a plain with a mountain range in the background.
