Born in Paris in a family of artists, Eugène Ciceri shows a certain predilection for the practice of watercolor. As a traveling painter, he produced numerous representations from the Alps to North Africa, including Brittany. He participated in the illustration of the famous Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France by Charles Nodier and Baron Taylor. He also collaborated with the latter for La Syrie, l'Égypte, la Palestine et la Judée, considérées sous leur aspect historique, archéologique, descriptif et pittoresque published in Paris in 1838-1839. In this unpublished sheet, Eugène Cicéri was inspired by a composition by Adrien Dauzats for this work and gives his own interpretation in colors. Traveling several times in the East, Baron Taylor was in charge of an official mission to Mehemet Ali in January 1830. Accompanied by Adrien Dauzats, Auguste Mayer and Vallet, the baron visited Egypt, Syria and Palestine from March to September 1830. Like many travelers, they went to Balbeck to contemplate the ruins of the famous temple of Jupiter. In addition to Dauzats, the latter was immortalized by several artists including Jules Coignet or Anna Lynker.
