Au Bal des Etudiants
Colored lithograph 56 x 38 cm (sheet) (folded). Small folds.
Beautiful print of Toulouse-Lautrec's Bal des étudiants from a drawing made in December 1900 during a ball in Bordeaux. In the foreground, the artist has depicted a generous masked woman accompanied by a man in a top hat who is none other than Paul Viaud, a long-time friend commissioned to watch over him. The clown and the orchestra, which also evoke the party, are in the second and third planes. The monogram appears at the bottom left of the poster, the title in red letters at the top.
The print was produced with only two colour highlights: yellow and red, both of which are nuanced. Au Bal des étudiants is the artist's last poster. He died in his family home in Malromé in the Bordeaux region in September 1901 at the age of 36.
