Errata, 57 plates; half brown basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets with title in gilt letters, hardback boards covered with brown marbled paper (Binding of the time very worn). Binding rubbed, corners dulled. Ink stain on the date on the title, some light wetness on the edge of several text sheets.

Second edition, the first published in 1820, of this work on gardens, the result of forty years of research and experimentation, by the grower and garden architect Gabriel Thouin. The illustration includes 57 plates drawn by the author and lithographed by Charles Motte, with the paths and water features finely watercolored at the time.

Gabriel Thouin (1754-1829), a famous French landscape artist, was the son of Jean-André Thouin, "Gardener of the King's Cabinet", and the brother of the famous botanist André Thouin to whom the work is dedicated. In his unique work, which has been reprinted several times, the author divides gardens into four main sections according to their various uses: economic or vegetable gardens (kitchen gardens...), fruit gardens or orchards, botanical gardens (pharmaceutical...), and pleasure gardens. The beautiful lithographed plates represent a variety of models surrounded by views of various garden buildings. Among the main plates, one can find: Garden of large vegetables, Vegetable garden, Orangery, Fruit gardens, Pharmaceutical garden, Project of enlargement of the Garden of the plants of Paris, Public garden, Palace garden, Chinese romantic garden, English fantastic garden, country gardens, silvester, fantastic, romantic, pleasure gardens, etc. as well as plates illustrating the manufactures for the decoration of the gardens (ancient monuments, Chinese, fountains, aviaries, bridges, houses...).
