VERSCHAFFELT, Ambroise

Ambroise Verschaffelt (1825-1886) was a Belgian horticulturist who made a remarkable contribution to the reputation of the city of Ghent by introducing exotic plants to Europe during the 19th century.

As a horticulturist, Verschaffelt took over the family business after the death of his father. The variety and exoticism of the plants brought by the "plant hunters" he sent mainly to South America allowed him to address a clientele in the great courts of Europe.

Ambroise also continued the publication of the Nouvelle Iconographie des camellias (1848-1860) undertaken by his father and edited the magazine L'illustration horticole. He won several prizes and medals during the exhibitions held by the Royal Society of Agriculture and Botany of Ghent abroad.

In 1869 he sold his company to Jean Linden and prepared for his retirement in the country where he was still in great demand because of his long experience.
