A good copy of this important work on Russia and Persia. Originally published in 1647 in German, the work was translated from the original by de Abraham de Wicquefort and published in Paris in 1656 (two other editions in French by de Wicquefort followed in 1659 and 1666). The French edition of 1719 by de Wicquefort, published in Leide by Vander Aa, is considerably expanded. This edition of Olearius' most important work is particularly prized because of its abundant iconography including 2 portraits - of the author and Czar Michael Federowits -, 12 maps and plans, 28 plates, most of them on double page, and numerous illustrations in the text. "Olearius shows himself in this work to be a judicious observer and sincere narrator. He was the first to indicate the position of many places. He drew the figures himself, and he drew the maps that accompany his account." Small marginal tear on p. 982, a few browned leaves and freckles, large tear without missing on last f., a few slight defects.
