LE PRINCE, Jean-Baptiste

Jean Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) was a student of François Boucher. He traveled in Italy, in Holland, then undertook in 1757 a long journey of 5 years in Russia. Active in St. Petersburg, he executed various commissions through the French ambassador, the Marquis de l'Hôpital, working in particular for Empress Elizabeth I on the decoration of the ceilings of the Winter Palace, and for the Russian nobility. Back in Paris in 1762, he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting in 1765 and exhibited at the Salon the same year.

Skilled draughtsman and engraver, Le Prince is known for his invention of a new type of genre scene, but also and above all for having perfected the technique of aquatint, which he calls "engraving in the manner of wash", which "reproduces to deceive the washes of sepia and bistre".
