HONTER, Joannes. Rudimentorum cosmographicorum Ioan. Coronensis libri III. Cum tabellis Geographicus elegantissimis [Zürich], Froschauer, a few unpaginated leaves (A-D8 the last 2 ff. blcs, a-d4 the last 2 ff. blcs) of which 14 are printed with engravings and maps enhanced in contemporary colors.

Provenance: The copy of Caleb Trygophorus, philosopher and professor of Logic in Frankfurt (Calebi Triglophoti Anno 1554 manuscript on the title). Printer's mark on f.7 Some old handwritten annotations. Ownership mark on the flyleaf (Ludovicus Reinhardus D.D.D. - Porunoni Berlitio 1866)

Third edition given by Froschauer of this description of the world in verse by Honter, illustrated with 13 maps entirely colored at the time.

Originally published in Krakow in 1530 with only two maps, the small cosmography, probably the most important work of the Krakow humanist, theologian and cartographer Johannes Honter (1498-1549), contains an instructive description of the world in verse and thus represents "the first scholastic atlas in pocket format" (LGK I, 321). It was republished in 1546 in Zürich with 13 double-page engraved maps except one.

The 1549 edition includes the same maps as the first Zurich edition.

These beautiful woodcut maps, colored at the time, show the world in the shape of a heart (Universalis Cosmographia, a reduced and simplified version of Waldseemüller's world map -Shirley 86), Spain, France, Germany, Poland, the Balkans, Greece, Italy, Palestine, Turkey, Asia, North Africa and Sicily. The three woodcut plates show an armillary sphere, a geocentric planetary system and a globe with the designation of the different winds.

Very rare copy in period colors. Some early handwritten annotations.VD 16, H 4780; Sabin 32796; Shirley 86; Tooley 367

Bound at the head :SOPHOCLE.Interpretatio Tragoediarum Sophoclis. Frankfurt, Petrus Brubachius, 1546.232 ff. (signatures A-I8, K-T8, V8, X-Z8, a8-f8 the last f. blank)
