Large folio (67 x 47 cm) of [3] ff. (false-title, title, table), 40 maps on 48 leaves; half-binding (damaged, stains and missing).

Entirely engraved work, dedicated to Monsieur, by H. Brué, engineer-geographer to H.A. Royale

The atlas includes 16 double-page copper-engraved maps, with boundaries colored at the time: 2 maps of the world, 2 of Europe, 2 of France, 2 of Asia, 2 of Africa, 4 of America (northern and southern) and 2 of Oceania, including 8 general maps in 1 sheet each, and 8 detailed maps in 4 sheets each. When mounted, the latter can measure up to 1.25 x 1.90m.

All maps are dated between 1814 and 1816, except for the one-sheet maps of Africa and the four-sheet maps of Oceania. After having traveled, notably in the North Seas, the West African area and Australia in 1803, Adrien-Hubert Brué (1786-1832) devoted himself, upon his return to France, to his passion, cartography. Cartographer and publisher of geographical maps in Paris, he was appointed "Geographer of H.R.H. Sir" and then "Geographer of the King". Author of several atlases and maps published separately, he published the first edition of his Great Universal Atlas in 1815. BRUÉ, Adrien Hubert

André Hubert Brué, French geographer and cartographer, was born in Paris. He served in the French navy and participated in the Baudin expedition to the Pacific (1800-1804). After his service at sea, Brué used his navigational and cartographic skills to create finely crafted maps. Brué's maps are renowned for their clarity, accuracy, and quality of engraving. He was one of the cartographers who drew their maps directly on copper plates. He is best known for his work "Atlas universel de géographie physique, politique, ancienne et moderne" that he first published in Paris during 1830.
