Paris, Editions Georges Visat, 1967 Large 8vo, loose as issued with off-white soft cover, title embossed in capital letters on the first cover, smooth spine, head trimmed, the other edges not trimmed, cardboard folder and case covered with a dark purple paper with golden stars, pale pink title label on the spine.

First edition with 7 full-page copper-engraved hors texte figures by Hans Bellmer, one of them in yellow-green, all signed in pencil by Bellmer. Edition at 165 copies numbered on large vellum of Rives, this one, the n°1, with suite on Japon Hosekawa nacré of the 7 signed burins.

BELLMER, Hans

Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was a Franco-German painter, photographer, engraver, draughtsman and sculptor who was highly representative of surrealism. Bellmer's life was filled with episodes marked by tyranny, violence and refuge in the imagination. Bellmer takes credit for provoking a physical crisis in his father and associates his own artistic creativity with childhood insubordination and resentment toward a harsh and humorless paternal authority. His art is interpreted as a struggle against his father, the police and, ultimately, fascism and the state.

The discovery of the work of the Marquis de Sade defined Bellmer's interest in sensuality and the alteration of the body as forms of manifestation against authority. Also the reading of published letters of Oskar Kokoschka (Der Fetish, 1925) gave shape to his art. From the 1930s until his death, he dealt almost exclusively with erotic images of the female anatomy, often based on the body of a battered woman: fetishism, sado-masochism, voyeurism... One of his most recognized works is The Doll.
