Description

Jansson's very decorative map of South East Asia.

The map stretches from Persia to Japan and is centred on the Philippines and Indonesia.

Of historical importance, this map is one of the first to show the Dutch discoveries in New Guinea and northern Queensland, Australia, made by the Dutch ship Duyfken in 1605-06: 'G.F. de Wit Landt' and 'Tlandt van Eendracht'. Under the command of Willem Janszoon, the Duyfken explored the eastern shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, just below the Cape York Peninsula, an adventure that was the first recorded European contact with Australia.

The map is taken from the French edition of Jansson's Novus Atlas.
