

Jansson's decorative map of 17th century Spain.
This map illustrates 17th century Sapin depicting Portugal, Galicia, Castile and Léon, Andalusia, Granada, Catalonia, Navarre, Aragon, Valencia, Murcia, and the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera). The map is embellished by sailing ships, a compass rose, a decorative cartouche and a coat of arms.
This map was originally drawn by Hessel Gerritsz and engraved by Henricus Hondius. Its first state was published for the first time in 1631 and it replaced the Mercator-Hondius map of Spain published around 1606. The present example of the map in its second state that appeared in the latin edition of Jan Jansson's Atlas Novus published between 1646 and 1657. It was also included in his German, Dutch, French, and Spanish versions of this atlas.
