Description

Beautiful example of Hondius' map of Europe in attractive modern colors.

The map depicts Europe in great detail with names of cities, mountains and rivers. It shows Greenland, Iceland and the mythical island of Frislandt in the north and extends to part of Africa in the south. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to parts of Asia in the east, showing Russia and the entire eastern Mediterranean coast. The land is illustrated by lions in Africa and bears in Russia, while a sea monster and sailing ships spread across the ocean. The title is presented in an elegant title cartouche.

This map is based on the very decorative map is based map of Europe by Jodocus Hondius and Jansson, first published in 1606 that included a illustrated frame. The first state of the map without illustrated boarder was published Jodocus Hondius in 1619, it was later published by his son Henricus in 1631, 1641 and 1645. The present example is the fourth state of this map as described by Van der Krogt, it appeared in the French edition of the Atlas Novus published between 1652 and 1659.
