Description

Engraved by Charaire, this interesting map was published as a supplement for the readers of the newspaper La Depeche, based in southwest France. The map depicts the naval fleets of Spain and the United States in the North Atlantic Ocean, and is characteristic of the Spanish-American War, whose main issue was Cuban independence. The map is surrounded by vignettes depicting the costumes of the American and Spanish military forces and views of Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Matanzas. The Americans won the short battle that gave them temporary control of Cuba and possession of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines, thus eliminating Spain's last possessions in the Americas and Asia.
