Description

Fine copy of Le Rouge's map of Africa.

It extends from India in the East to the Cape Verde Islands in the West. The author depicts Brazil, unusually close to Africa, which can be seen at the western end of the map.

According to a note engraved above the title, the map draws its information from different sources: Jesuits, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. The coasts of the map were engraved after the marine charts of the Count of Maurepas, Secretary of State for the Navy of Louis XV from 1723 to 1749.

The map is elegantly decorated with an allegorical title cartouche depicting Europeans and Africans conversing.
