Description

Rare first edition of Coronelli's map of the Caribbean published by Nolin. The map extends from Florida in the North to Venezuela in the South. It is centered on the Caribbean islands which appear in majesty. It allows us to understand the region as it was known at the end of the 18th century. A lot of historical information about the discovery of the islands by the Europeans is included. Although geographically quite accurate for the time, many approximations are visible, such as the shape of Florida. Two years before the publication of this map, Nolin and Coronelli concluded a contract for the production of maps of North America. Coronelli was then in Paris to prepare the King's globes, which can be seen today at the BnF: https://www.bnf.fr/fr/les-globes-de-louis-xiv

NOLIN, Jean-Baptiste

Jean Baptiste Nolin (1657-1708), son of Parisian engraver Jean Nolin, followed the footsteps of his father with his brother François. Jean Baptiste was a pupil of Nicolas de Poilly, merchant and engraver to the king. Nolin's meeting with Father Coronelli encouraged him to specialize in geography. In December 1694, he became geographer to the Duc d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, and in 1701, he received the title of geographer to the king. He was especially known for the globe he engraved for Coronelli 1686. After he specialized in geography, he moved from the Rue Saint-Jacques to the Quai d'Horloge, where geographers and dealers in scientific instruments opened their shops.
