Description

Rare second state of Seutter's map of New England in original color, with a beautiful view of New York City.

This map is based on Jansson's map of 1651. Seutter replaces the Restitutio view of New York, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch rule from late 1672 to February 1674, with a new view of New York entitled Neu Jorck sive Neu Amsterdam and a Latin key.

The map features an elaborate scene in which the English monarch George II is depicted surrounded by natives and gods presenting him with tribute. The map is here in its rare second state. There are six states of this map, three of which bear Seutter's imprint: in the first state, he is mentioned as the cartographer and "Chalcographi Augustani" is indicated as the place of publication. In the second state, he is mentioned as an imperial geographer and the place of publication is indicated by "Sac. Caes. Maj. Geographi August. Vindi". In the third state, an additional line mentions the privilege. After Seutter's death, his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three more states were published.
