

Attractive map of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The map includes in the upper part, a plan of the Strait with the cities of Cadiz, Gibraltar, Marbella, Tangier, Ceuta
Two legends, one in French and the other in German, frame the map and give the important military points and main constructions of the map below. In its lower part, a plan illustrates the fortress on the rock of Gibraltar. The map is embellished with two compass roses and an elegant allegorical cartouche.
Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777) was a pioneer among German cartographers, publishers and engravers of the 18th century. He was based in Augsburg where he engraved numerous maps published by his father-in-law, Matthaus Seutter, the imperial geographer and engraver of Augsburg. Lotter took over Seutter's business in 1756.
